Halftone

Halftone

A halftone (aka line screen, screen, halftone screen) is the technique used to imply a tone, or different tones using a solid color. This is done by using hundreds of small dots of varying size & spacing so that at a certain distance our eyes will see a tone rather than dots. This is most noticeable in newspaper’s black and white images, but is used to some extent in every digital printing process. It can be use subtly like in the tree in Garrett Richardson’s business card, or quite dramatically by printing a monochromatic photo.

Pros
Mutiple tones in the same run
cheaper than multiple colors
photo-like print
Cons
Not good for typography
low-contrast
